Zaporizhzhia

Zaporizhzhya (Ukrainian: Запоріжжя (Russian: Zaporozhye, Запорожье) is a city in south-eastern Ukraine, the capital of Zaporiz'ka oblast'. It lies on the banks of the Dnieper river.

History

The Khortytsia Island in the middle of modern Zaporizhzhya was one of the historic locations for the Zaporiz'ka Sitch - the main fortress/capital of the Viys'ko Zaporiz'ke Cossack republic.
