Wanganui is a city on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, the seat of the Wanganui District Council. It was renamed Petre by Europeans in the early 19th century but reverted to the original Wanganui in 1852.

Features of the district include the Whanganui River (renamed from Wanganui to include the letter "h" in 1991) and the Royal Wanganui Opera House.
