Visual effects

Visual Effects is the term given to a sub-category of Special Effects in which images are recorded and manipulated. Visual effects are usually planned in Pre-production and created in Production and Postproduction.

Visual Effects may be subdivided into four categories:

• Models - miniature sets, animatronic models
• Matte Paintings and Stills - paintings, background plates
• Live-action effects - actors or animatronics against backgrounds
• Digital animation - cell or computer generated characters or images

Special Effects also cover another sub-category of Physical Effects.
