Tabar V zquez

Tabaré Ramón Vázquez Rosas (born 17 January 1940) is currently leader of Uruguay's leftist Broad Front coalition (Frente Amplio in Spanish). He was elected President on October 31, 2004, after unsuccessful runs as the Frente Amplio candidate in 1999 and 1994. In the 1999 elections he received 48% percent of the vote in the presidential election runoff, losing to Jorge Batlle. In the 2004 elections, he won more than 50% of the vote on the first ballot, eliminating the need for a runoff election.

He is often compared to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President of Brazil. He is a physician by training. Vázquez is a member of the Broad Front coalition which includes Socialists, Communists, Social Democrats and a former guerrilla movement.
