SomariSomari is a Hong Kong-made pirate version of Sega's flagship video game Sonic the Hedgehog. Somari runs on the 8-bit Nintendo Family Computer instead of the 16-bit Sega Megadrive or Genesis, a notable achievement since the Famicom was an older and much less powerful system. The game is also interesting since at the time, Sega and Nintendo were rivals for the video game console market and it would have been unthinkable for an official Sonic game to be released for a Nintendo system, although with Sega's later withdrawal from the console manufacturing business, Sonic has since appeared on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and Gamecube. The game's title character is "Somari", an obvious knock-off of Mario in appearance, but with Sonic the Hedgehog's abilities. The game has the following levels:
The Scrap Brain Zone is unfinished and not accessible from normal gameplay. It can only be accessed by creating a save state with an emulator, then modifying the state file with an external program. There is no ending sequence. The ending consists of Doctor Eggman juggling emeralds in an infinite loop. Being a pirate game, it was probably released in fairly limited numbers, and only in Asia. The game has become more well known recently through the phenomenon of console emulation. Other versionsSonic 3D 5 is identical to Somari, except the player plays Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic 3D 6 is basically Sonic 3D 5 with a new title screen. These games are not to be confused with the legitimate Sonic 3D Blast. There is also a hack of Somari called Family Kid. External links
