Singaporean ChineseSingaporean Chinese are the group of Singaporeans of Chinese descent who live in Singapore. They make up the majority of Singaporeans (76.8%) of the population and they are active in the government and various fields of society. Some Malays and many Eurasians in Singapore may have some Chinese ancestry in them. 68% of them are either of the Buddhist, Taoist, or Confucian faith. Many of these are actually agnostic or atheist. 32% of them are Christian, either of the Protestant, Roman Catholic or Anglican faith. The Singaporean Chinese are descended from various dialect groups, each speaking their own dialect. The majorty of them are of Hokkien and Teochew descent, though intermarriages between dialect groups is very common. The usuage of Chinese dialects is in rapid decline, since Lee Kuan Yew discouraged the usuage of dialects and encouraged the usuage of Mandarin instead, with the intention of uniting the Singaporean Chinese as one group. |
