Shtetl

Shtetl(Shtetele) ("little city" in Yiddish) are small towns and villages with large Jewish populations, particularly found throughout the area of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania (later, the Pale of Settlement of Russian Empire and Galicia, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine) and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Big cities like Lemberg, Czernowitz are "shtot".
