Sex and the City

Sex and the City poster

Sex and the City is a book and newspaper column written by Candace Bushnell, and an American cable television show based on Bushnell's writing.

The television series, produced by the HBO network, portrays the lives of four best friends from New York City who are reaching their forties and looking for love, often in the wrong places. The series debuted in 1998 and the last original episode aired in early 2004.

Likened to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the show tackles socially relevant issues such as the status of women in society. It suggests to the audience that friendships are the best women can hope for and that men are icing on that cake.

The show stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.

The show puts Carrie (Parker), a columnist on sex and love, together with Charlotte (Davis), a traditional and relatively conservative woman; Miranda (Nixon), a career-minded lawyer; and Samantha (Cattrall), a wild-living, fun-loving woman who stops at nothing to get the men she wants, yet has a heart of gold.

As time progressed, so did the characters and situations. Primarily a sitcom, but with soap opera elements, the show has consistently achieved both critical and popular acclaim. By the fourth season, many elements of the series, such as the overall tone and the characters, had diverged considerably from the book.

The girl-talk, dating games and fashion have attracted much attention from the audiences. The fancy clothes and shoes (mostly Patricia Field's, Jimmy Choo's and Manolo Blahnik's) that Carrie wears have made her a fashion icon in many fashion magazines.

Season One of Sex and the City aired on HBO from June to August 1998. The second season was broadcast from June until October 1999. Season Three aired from June until October 2000. The fourth season was broadcast in two parts: from June until August 2001, and then in January and February 2002. A truncated fifth season aired on HBO during the summer of 2002. The 20 episodes of the final season, Season Six, aired in two parts: from June until September 2003 and during January and February, 2004.

The last original episode of Sex and the City aired on HBO on February 22, 2004.

In the UK, Channel 4 and its digital sister channel E4 broadcast episodes of Sex and the City, while older episodes are rerun on the Paramount Comedy Channel. In Canada, the show airs on Bravo! Canada and in Germany it is shown on Pro7. In the Netherlands, the show is aired by Net 5 and in Sweden it's aired by TV3 and ZTV. In Italy the show airs on La7. In Australia it is broadcast on Channel 9. Sex and the City was banned in Singapore untill July 2004, when the government allows the television series to be aired on cable after being censored.

Alternative episode versions

Sex and the City is currently in syndication in slightly edited form on TBS and Citytv Toronto. Producers actually filmed alternate versions of all scenes for the purpose of being broadcast in stricter environments than cable. These provide an alternative to bleeping out profanities, and obscene words.
