Paul Hawken

Paul Hawken is an American entrepreneur and author. He was an important figure in the natural food movement in the 1970s, and later an author. He wrote many books and articles on intentional community, and on the eco-village and ecology movement.

His books include The Next Economy, The Ecology of Commerce, and (with Amory Lovins and Hunter Lovins) Natural Capitalism. The latter two were influential in the development of the theory of natural capital and of the human economy as a service economy based on nature's services. He was one of the first to suggest a price of Earth could be calculated based on assumptions imposed by a given political economy.

In 1993, he coined the term restorative economy in his book "The Ecology of Commerce" as a more durable principle than sustainability:

• waste equals food, a more advanced idea of waste as resource
• current solar income - an idea originating with Buckminster Fuller's Cosmic Costing.
• increase biodiversity
