Military of Bosnia and Herzegovina

In 1995-96, a NATO-led international peacekeeping force (IFOR) of 60,000 troops served in Bosnia, beginning on December 21st 1995 to implement and monitor the military aspects of the agreement. IFOR was succeeded by a smaller, NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) whose mission is to deter renewed hostilities. SFOR remains in place although troop levels were reduced to approximately 12,000 by the close of 2002.

The military forces of Bosnia itself are divided between:

  • Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Vojska Federacije, VF), whose the air and air defense forces are subordinate commands within the Army
  • Army of the Republika Srpska (Vojska Republike Srpske, VRS), whose air and air defense forces are subordinate commands within the Army

Two military parts have a central recently unified command.
