Kerry PrendergastKerry Prendergast is the current Mayor of Wellington. Before entering politics, Prendergast was a midwife and a nurse. She was elected to the Tawa Borough Council (now integrated into Wellington) in 1986, and joined the Wellington City Council in 1989. In 1995, she became Deputy Mayor under Mark Blumsky. Predergast attempted to enter Parliament in the 1999 elections, standing in 30th place on the National Party's list, but was not elected. In 2001, Prendergast was thinking of making another attempt, but when Blumsky announced his retirement, she instead opted to pursue the mayoralty with his endorsement. She was successful in 2001 and as of October 2004 has been provisionally re-elected for a second term.
