JacaJaca is a city of northeastern Spain near the border with France, in the midst of the Pyrenees in the province of Huesca. Once the capital of the former Kingdom of Aragon until 1097, Jaca is today home to approximately 11,000 residents and is a premier tourist destination in the region for summer holidays and winter sport. Its popularity for winter sports has been a motivating factor in the city's failed bids for the 1998 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Olympics. It is currently debating a nomination for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Jaca, an episcopal see in the Roman Catholic Church, is home to medieval walls and towers surrounding an 11th century cathedral built in Romanesque architecture. Invading Moors captured the city and administered it as a Muslim state. Christians eventually recaptured it in the name of the Catholic king and the Pope.
