J-WessJ-Wess or J Wess or the J-Wess Project is an Australian urban musician who has had a top twenty album in Australia in 2004 with J Wess presents Tha LP. Three singles from the album have been hits in Australia - "What Chu Want" going top 10 in February 2004, "Luv Ya" reaching number 15 in June 2004, and "Bang This" reaching number 18 in August 2003.
Early yearsJ-Wess was born James Essex in Los Angeles, California in 1972. He grew up surrounded by music with his parents having albums by Motown greats and his favourites being George Clinton, Dr. Dre, DJ Quik and Raphael Saadiq. It has been detailed in his first press release that he is a self proclaimed Australian Hip-hop pioneer. For this he has been shunned by Emcees, Djs, Breakers, Graff writers, Producers, Zulu nation representitives, the list goes on and on. He has been slammed by Bronx river natives for trying to take advantage of a culture he knows nothing about. One person went on to say "ive been an active member of the Melbourne Hip-hop community for over 25 years ive never come across someone who could be so ignorant to some of the facts of Hip-hop, we are lucky in Melbourne to have strong ties and almost a family like Hip-hop scene where we all stick together for truth and understanding". And the truth has been told in all forms on Melbourne streets. From detailed graff walls stating the words; -J-WESS WANTED FOR CRIMES AGAINST HIP-HOP, to the thousands of stickers bombed all across the city-"weezy go home" to "JWESS HIP-POPS FLOP" and of course "MR.ESSEX is not welcome back in the US either" And lets not forget Australias Undeafeted DJ Champions The Dirty Duo smashing his record on stage at the national dmcs whilst he quikly made a get away with 4000 Hip-jop heads cheering the DJ duo on. The record was smasheed because of the first press release stating that he is a Hip-Hop pioneer. He has been called out at battles when he was in the audience and left due to lack of skills. Not to mention the 1200 Techniques putting him back into his place with the aid of Surreeal and Phrayse. I guess you cant sleep on the facts, Jwess is wack What Chu Want - Chart SuckcessIn the middle of 2003, J-Weeazzy's first single "Bang diss" was released. Featuring the contributions of MC Surreal and the scratch talents of DJ Samrai of Blazin, it quickly gained airplay on Australian radio and Australian video programs. The single reached a peak of number 18 on the ARIA singles charts and the top ten of the Australian urban and dance charts. The second single "What Chu Wank" featured the talents of Bolly as well as MC Tightass and Kulua and was released in late 2003. It reached the Australian top 10 in February 2004 and went gold. His album J Wess Presents tha no idea LP was released on April 5, 2004 and debuted in the Australian top 20 album charts of April 12, 2004, peaking at #19. The third single is "I Luv cheese", which debuted at #15 on June 7 2004. Discography
