An Indian American is a person who was either born in India and immigrated to the United States, or were born in the United States and have Indian ancestry. Indian Americans account for about 1% of the total population of the United States, numbering nearly 2 million residents who either are legal citizens or permanent residents. Additionally there are about 500,000 to 1 million Indians who work in the country and have been granted work permits and visas. Many specialize in computer software and hardware industry, medical and health careers, engineers and specialists.
