Federalist

The term federalist can refer to different ideologies, depending on the locale. It usually has a link, close or not, to the concept of federalism.

  • In Europe, especially in places like Switzerland, a federalist is a proponent of regional autonomy within a country.
  1. Historically, statesmen and public figures supporting ratification of the proposed Constitution of the United States between 1787 and 1789. The Federalist Papers are documents associated with their movement.
  2. Historically, statesmen and public figures supporting the administrations of President George Washington (17891797) and President John Adams (17971801).
  3. Currently, the Federal Party of the United States of America.
