Drop BearA Drop Bear (or Dropbear), Phascolarctus Bityness, is a mythical Australian marsupial supposedly related to the Koala. Like the jackalope in the US west, the drop bear is a part of local lore that is used to frighten and confuse outsiders and amuse locals. Tales of their ferocity vary, but drop bears are commonly said to be unusually large, vicious koalas who inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above. They are said by some to be particularly aggravated by the tone and cadence of the North American accent, and tourists to whom tales of drop bears are related are often advised to wear crash-helmets when in the vicinity of bushland locations. Some localised variants of drop bear lore suggest that the liberal application of Vegemite to exposed areas of the body is an effective form of repellant. RelatedExternal links
