Delerium is an electronica/new age band from Vancouver, B.C., Canada formed in 1984 (see 1984 in music) by Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber. Although both musicians have played together in other bands since, Delerium is still their most successful ongoing project.

Delerium is an unusual mix of dance, New Age, pop, world and rock genres. Each "milestone" Delerium album (the four discs released under the Nettwerk label) has dealt with a different style of music.

Delerium, in contrast to other Leeb-Fulber projects such as Frontline Assembly, is almost entirely female-fronted. While Kristy Thirsk can best be considered the lead singer of the band, Sarah McLachlan, Leigh Nash (of Sixpence None the Richer), Lisa Gerrard, Matthew Sweet, and Jacqui Hunt (of Single Gun Theory) have each sung lead vocals on at least one of Delerium's albums.


Albums

Of their albums, Karma is undoubtedly their most famous, and, many would argue, still their best album, followed by Semantic Spaces. Most people know of Delerium only from their work produced on the Nettwerk label, as they were relative unknowns for quite some time before the release of Semantic Spaces.

In addition, Delerium has released the Odyssey remix compilation as well as two Greatest Hits compilations (Archives I and II) featuring their best music from the pre-Karma years. All three of these compilations appeared in late 2002.

Delerium's success has hinged largely on the catchy, ethno-pop single "Silence" featuring vocals by Sarah McLachlan. It is still considered by many to be one of Delerium's greatest songs of all time, and it's easy to see why: the beat, vocals, melody and complexity of the arrangement propelled it instantly to the top of the electronic music charts, where it remains even years later. Now the unofficial anthem of Britain (played to celebrate their Y2K New Year's, as well as several other national events), "Silence" is still as popular as ever, and continues to draw fans to Delerium's unique sound.

The genre that describes or categorizes the group's musical style includes terms such as trance, trip hop, electronic, Gothic rock, industrial, and new age. Delerium also records under the guises of Equinox, Front Line Assembly, Intermix, Noise Unit, Pro-Tech, and Synęsthesia
