David ChristophersonDavid Christopherson is a Canadian politician, the NDP Member of Parliament for the riding of Hamilton Centre, Ontario. He was first elected a New Democratic Party (NDP) MPP for Hamilton Centre in the provincial legislature in 1990 and served as Minister of Correctional Services and Solicitor General in the Cabinet of Bob Rae until the government's defeat in the 1995 Ontario election. Christopherson retained his seat and, in 1999, moved to the riding of Hamilton West due to redistribution. After serving as House Leader for the party when it was in opposition, he left the legislature to run for mayor in 2003. He lost a close race (by approximately 16,000 votes) to Larry DiIanni, mostly due to the amalgamation of more right-leaning suburbs with the city of Hamilton. Christopherson ran for the Federal NDP as a candidate for the riding of Hamilton-Centre in the 2004 Canadian election. His chances were enhanced by fellow New Democrat Andrea Horwath's provincial by-election victory in the same area in May. Despite running against cabinet minister and Paul Martin loyalist Stan Keyes. Christopherson won a seat in the Canadian House of Commons by a margin of some 5,000 votes. In the NDP's shadow cabinet he is Critic for Cities and Community Infrastructure, Labour, Steel Policy.
