Burundi
HistoryMain article: History of Burundi Burundi existed as an independent kingdom from the sixteenth century. In the 1890s it became a German colony and passed to Belgium in World War I. Since independence it has been controlled by a series of military dictators and has seen extensive ethnic violence including major incidents in 1964, 1972 and the late 1990s. After several years of civil war and interethnic violence Burundi a cease-fire is currently standing, mostly due to the international presence in the country.
