The movie is based on the same storyline as the epic Anglo-Saxon poem with a few sci-fi twists. For example, instead of flowing robes, Beowulf wears a tight leather suit, similar to that of the gimp from Pulp Fiction. Hrothgar has dreams in which a woman (who turns out to be Grendel's mother) seduces him and gives him sexual pleasure, causing him to think of his late wife. Beowulf cuts Grendel's arm off with a retracting cestus as Grendel has him in a choke hold. Beowulf kills Grendel's mother by cutting a fire vent conveniently placed in front of her, causing flames to engulf her and surrounding the castle in fire. The movie does not, however, cover Beowulf's death by the dragon, or his ensuing royalty, and he escapes the falling castle with Kyra. He does not become king in the movie version because Hrothgar, and everyone else inside the castle, dies. The movie comes from the same producer as Mortal Kombat, so it contains the same B-movie action sequences, cheesy dialogue, and forced acting. It also has an industrial techno soundtrack applied to it, which does not fit the movie's environment of primitive technology and castles. |
