Argentina was represented at 18 previous games (1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000) and in its history won more than 50 medals. The country has also won 13 gold medals, however all of them prior to the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.
